Itinerary

African immersion begins the moment your plane touches down. Smells, sights and sounds will flood your senses and forever remain- this is Africa”

African immersion begins

Day 1: September 1: Arrive Kilimanjaro International Airport

Your guide will meet you and transfer you to Mt Meru Lodge. Nestled in leafy gardens along the Usa River, Rivertrees combines old world ambiance, African country elegance, excellent farm cuisine and genuine warmth from your hosts. Enjoy the afternoon relaxing in the gardens or by the pool. Mt Meru Lodge (Full board)

Day 2: September 2: Arusha National Park

If this morning is clear then the jagged volcanic rim of Mount Meru will be the perfect African vista for your first game drive. Although one of the smallest of Tanzania’s parks Arusha National Park is one of the most beautiful and protects a diversity of habitats. The features of the park include Mt Meru a dormant volcano; Ngurdoto Crater a fully intact, 3km wide, 400m deep caldera; Serengeti Ndogo (Little Serengeti) and the Momela Lake. Enjoy a picnic lunch and a guided walk. Mt Meru (Full board).

Day 3: September 3: Tarangire National Park.

Depart after breakfast, with a picnic lunch for Tarangire National Park. This park offers a good opportunity for lion and leopard sightings. As well as supporting one of the highest population densities of elephants in Africa, Tarangire is also renowned for its spectacular diversity of birds. Game drive along the famous Tarangire River and the rugged baobab studded terrain before arriving at Tarangire Safari Lodge. The lodge is a very comfortable semi-permanent tented camp, located in one of the best spots in Tanzania over-looking magnificent views of the Tarangire River and the game below. Enjoy the splendour and action from the pool or if you choose from the spa (while having a massage). Overnight Tarangire Safari Lodge (Full board, private vehicle)

Day 4: September 4: Tarangire National Park.

It is worth rising for an early morning game drive. The elusive leopard is easier to spot, animals are more active and the morning light is beautiful. You can decide if you want to return to camp for lunch and cool off in the pool or take a picnic with you and continue game driving. Overnight Tarangire Safari Lodge (Full Board, private vehicle)

Day 5: September 5: Lake Manyara National Park and Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area.

Leave Tarangire National Park for your journey through the African Rift Valley. As you wind your way up the Great Rift Valley wall, traversing 2000m through some of Tanzania’s richest farming country, you encounter dramatic views across the soda lake of Manyara. En-route pass through the town of Mtu wa mbu (river of mosquitoes), a busy little trading town selling souvenirs and sweet red bananas. Game drive in Lake Manyara National Park. Continue up into the Ngorongoro Highlands, as you near the crater rim farm land gives way to lush high land forest and finally one of the most spectacular vistas will fill your senses-the ancient caldera of the Ngorongoro Crater and, several hundred metres below, the lost world within. This evening you will overnight in Rhino Lodge. The modest lodge with friendly, helpful staff is operated in partnership with the local Maasai Community. Overnight Rhino Lodge (Full Board, private vehicle)

Day 6: September 6: Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area.

Today’s game drive takes you to the crater floor and into one of the mostly densely packed wildlife areas in the world. It is possible to see rhino, bull elephants with huge ivory tusks, lion and leopard as well as hooved game -though no giraffe, as the crater walls are too steep for them to negotiate. Overnight Rhino Lodge (Full Board, private vehicle).

Day 7: September 7: Serengeti National Park.

An early breakfast is followed by a game drive transfer to the world famous heritage site the Serengeti National Park. Your journey continues around the crater rim where Maasai dominate the scenery tending to their cattle. Soon you will leave the rim and make the descent into the vast open grass plains of the Serengeti. You now have time to explore the magic of the Serengeti, from the open plains to acacia lined rivers to kopjes – the tops of ancient mountain ranges buried beneath layer upon layer of volcanic dust that rise up in the plains as giant boulders. Enjoy a night in a luxury camp, where each beautiful room has an en-suite with hot running water. Be prepared for animals, including elephants and lions, moving through the camp at night creating the authentic African experience. This evening make a plan with your guide for the best way to explore the beauty of the Serengeti. Overnight Central Serengeti Camp (Full board, private vehicle)

Day 8: September 8: Serengeti National Park.

A full day to discover the extraordinary environment of the Serengeti. Overnight Northern Serengeti Camp (Full board, private vehicle)

Day 9: September 9: Serengeti National Park.

Rise to another day of exploring the wilderness. Overnight Northern Serengeti Camp (Full board, private vehicle)

Day 10: September 10: Depart Kilimanjaro International Airport.

Board your light aircraft for an amazing flight out of the Serengeti to Kilimanjaro International Airport. Pass over the Serengeti plains, the Ngorongoro crater rim and the rift valley as you head to your final destination and onward journey home.
