Sample Itinerary
This is for keen kayakers, but you don’t have to be an expert, the water will not be rough, the distances are manageable and a support vehicle is not far away.
We will be living simply, camping lightweight in the bush for much of the time, it will be a real expedition.

Day 1
- Leave Arusha and drive to the Nyumba Ya Mungu Reservoir and paddle South. The birdlife is plentiful and diverse and there may be hippos and crocs to watch out for.
- Behind us Mount Kilimanjaro should be wishing us on our way.
- We will portage a very short distance to the start of the Pangani River and paddle further South as the terrain gets drier and drier around us.
- We will camp on the banks of the river and cook under the stars.
Day 2
- The morning will see us continuing South down the Pangani River with dry plains on one side and the Eastern Arc Mountains looming on the other until we reach the Pangani River Camp - a basic camping ground with pretty views, but with proper toilets and cold drinks.
Day 3 & 4
- Depending on the time of year and amount of rain we may then continue further down the river or we may catch our support vehicle and drive to the mouth of the Pangani River – a small town called Pangani.
- Here we can stay at a lodge on the beach and relax for a day.
Day 5
- We paddle out of the Pangani Estuary into the Indian Ocean. With remote beaches, old palm plantations and coastal forest we head south.
- On a clear day we should be able to see Pemba Island out to sea.
- We will pull up and camp on a beach en-route.

Day 6 & 7
- Continuing South we reach Saadani National Park and spend the night in a beach lodge, relaxing on the beach, snorkeling and going for game drives.
- It is supposedly the only place in the world to see African elephants paddling in the Indian Ocean!
Day 8
- Still heading south we paddle on towards the town of Pangani and stay the night in a beach fishing village.
- You can go out fishing in a traditional “dhow” fishing boat and help sail it.
Day 9
- The final day of paddling will see us in Bagamoyo- a fascinating old trading post with haunting glimpses of the slave trade, old Arabic and Colonial trading posts and the beginnings of a new start.
- We stay in a nice beachside lodge and take a well-earned rest.
Day 10
- We drive to Dar Es Salaam – hopefully to the sound of congratulatory fanfares and maybe a press conference, then celebrate in a luxurious hotel.
